I recently purchased this product on the conclusion from a friend's review of the previous model, the Nexstar 2. I had a little doubt about the machine, but after putting it together with a Seagate 250 GB 3.5" Hard Drive, I powered up the drive and...it works magnificently. I formatted the drive for an ext. NTFS system (Windows XP) and tried it on my Ti Powerbook loaded w/ Mac OSX Tiger read it fine, but it doesn't want to write to it. Now what should I do?
Back to the review. The drive combo works flawlessly. It's fast but not as fast as I thought it would be. I transferred about 60GB from my HP dv1000 straight to the drive and formatted my laptop. It took a while more like 10-15 mins, but I guess that is fast. Plugged it in again afterwards to restore the data, but just thought to myself that I should try running programs off of it and / or my MP3s. Good stuff. I would definitely recommend this combination to anyone and everyone who wants just straight backup and extended capacity. Now, I can be at peace in getting a 4GB nano iPod.
I took it out of the box and I have to admit I was surprised. The form factor is tiny! It's just large enough to hold the drive. The black finish is awesome, but I have to wipe it down because it easily shows fingerprints. Just like the Sony PSP. The blue LED in front is bright as hell. Maybe a little too bright at night, but it definitely finished off the piece of hardware.
If you are looking for anything in the realm of storage, not only is this an affordable way to increase your data capacity, but it is also a sleek and handsome addition to anyone's desk. You can even store it in your jacket pocket and bring it everywhere and anywhere you want to go. No drivers needed for today's operating systems. You can't even hear it once it is spun up. The aluminum casing is cool and keeps the drive cold. Vantec definitely has released a great product. I have to give it a 10/10. Now that the bar is raised, Vantec has competition only with itself.
